Safety nets are even more important these days. Creating your own side business can help you through the hard times, and may even become your full-time gig.
Matt Sharpe began working in pool construction for his brother-in-law, Justin Evans. He did this for six years, while in college. What Matt didn't know was that Justin, who lost his battle with cancer at only 34, had set him up for future success.
During the slow summer months I would always brainstorm business ideas or ways to make a side hustle.
Matt left pool building with Justin to do what so many others do, jump into the corporate America pool. He tested the waters there and found it wasn't to his liking. So he decided to find a career doing something he enjoyed. Matt shares, "When I decided to change careers I chose something I really enjoyed and took a job offer as a Sales Professional with Acusport Corporation." He adds, "Acusport was a national firearms, ammo and accessories distributor with a West regional office in Roseville. For 6 years I rode the roller coaster of gun sales. Our industry was so volatile and politically charged. Most years under Obama were strong but it was still unpredictable. During the slow summer months I would always brainstorm business ideas or ways to make a side hustle." (#corporateamerica, #corporatejobs)
I always knew I wanted to start my own business but it was hard to risk giving up a stable, good paying job that really was easy.
Matt said that the idea of being a business owner was always in the back of his mind. He explains, "I always knew I wanted to start my own business but it was hard to risk giving up a stable, good paying job that really was easy. It was in the spring of 2017 after Trump became president and the industry really slowed that I decided to get my contractors license, design pools and build a couple here and there." Luckily, for Matt, he was already experienced. He knew the pool industry, and knew what it was going to take to make it a successful side hustle. But what he didn't expect was what came next. Matt confides, "The process took about 6 months. My wife Megan and I created a corporation, built a website and social media accounts and organized our team of subcontractors. Meanwhile, things at Acusport continued to decline. it was obvious something was wrong and rumors about financial troubles were spreading like wildfires. Everyone knew Acusport was struggling but we thought the company was too big to fail so fast. They had been in business for over 60 years. (#blindsided)
Time to save yourself when the corporation you work for is drowning
Sometimes when we are forced to make a move, it makes all the difference in the world. The same happened for Matt. He shares "When Megan and I launched Sharpe Design Pools it took off immediately. Friends and family spread the word and we were flooded with business. It caught me off guard and made me face a design to choose one path." With the business's overwhelming success, Matt admits, "At this point my 'side business' was about to be my full time job."
At this point my 'side business' was about to be my full time job.
"My very supportive wife eased my fears and we took the leap," confides Matt. (It's a good thing they acted on their gut instinct, because two months later the company he worked for filed bankruptcy and laid almost everyone off.) "We feel very grateful and joke about the good timing."(#layoffs, #unemployed, #unemployment)
